Between Myths and Legends of Sicily

Vienna, Austria

Vienna, the historic capital of European music, is set to welcome the primordial energy of Sicily in an event that challenges the boundaries between tradition and the future. On Sunday, March 15th, at 7:00 PM, the prestigious Halle E+G at MuseumsQuartier will host “Between Myths and Legends of Sicily,” a significant new international milestone for the MUSIC4D project. The performance explores the archetypal duality of “Water and Fire” – a defining identity for an island cradled by the Mediterranean and dominated by the volcanic power of Mount Etna.

The event, conceived and coordinated by Maestro Epifanio Comis, features an inter-institutional orchestra composed of top talents from the Conservatories of Catania, Palermo, and Messina. The production’s distinctive edge lies in its integration of advanced technology, utilizing MAX/MSP software and Artificial Intelligence algorithms. The music interacts in real-time with an experimental video apparatus directed by Gianpaolo Romania and avant-garde lighting design by Pixel Shapes. In this vision, technology transcends being a mere accessory, becoming a vital tool capable of expanding Sicilian symbolism into a total immersive experience.

The musical program offers a journey into the island’s roots through deeply evocative works: Immersa Vox by Emanuele CasaleLa Giara by Alfredo Casella – inspired by Pirandello’s novella – and Bellini Reloaded by Giovanni Ferrauto, a sophisticated homage to the genius of Catania. The performance will culminate with Scriabin’s Prometheus: The Poem of Fire, envisioned here as the apotheosis of volcanic fire and creation. This finale will be amplified by digital scenography, enveloping the audience in a visual narrative that bridges the twentieth century with bold contemporaneity.

This Viennese residency represents a further milestone in the internationalization strategy of MUSIC4D, the PNRR-funded project led by the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo, with the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory of Catania serving as the creative engine for this specific event. The appointment confirms the strength of a project aimed at consolidating the excellence of the Italian Higher Arts and Music Education system (AFAM) on the world’s greatest stages. It is a continuous process of research where historical memory and scientific innovation unite to redraw the boundaries of musical culture.
