AFAM4Sicily: United for Niscemi

The event at the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo

The event “AFAM4Sicily: Rebirth through Music and Art,” held on April 9th, was an extraordinary institutional and public success, transforming the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo into a “laboratory of hope.” This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) as a social extension of the MUSIC4D PNRR project, fostered an unprecedented connection between the Academies of Fine Arts of Palermo and Catania, the Conservatories of Sicily and Sardinia, and university partners (UniPa and UniCal), all united to support the community of Niscemi, recently struck by a severe hydrogeological disaster.

The event demonstrated how Higher Education in Art and Music (AFAM) can translate artistic talent into a powerful act of civic engagement. Speaking on the high-profile nature of the initiative, Minister Anna Maria Bernini stated:

“Sicily does not need anyone to come and tell her about beauty, because she has it in her blood, carved in stone, and written in music. What the State can do – what we all must do- is stand by this land as it builds its own future. AFAM4Sicily stems from the conviction that higher education in art, music, and dance – the AFAM system – is an instrument for both redemption and cohesion. This form of education is not a luxury or an ornament; it is a concrete tool for social elevation and hope. It is proof that culture is, above all, a living force. It is energy that transforms. I believe that Sicily deserves all of this.”

The day featured an immersive journey through virtual reality and various visual and sound installations – such as “MUSIC4D VISIONS,” “Fantastic Mediterranean,” and the interactive work “Remote Decay”- which engaged visitors and authorities alike, including the Deputy Mayor of Palermo, Giampiero Cannella, and the Rector of the University of Palermo, Massimo Midiri. A moment of significant strategic importance was the announcement by Senator Maria Alessandra Gallone, President of ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), regarding the signing of a convention between the Palermo Conservatory and the newly established Ennio Morricone Foundation, a symbol of culture fostering community and solidarity.

The Director of the Palermo Conservatory, Mauro Visconti, expressed his pride in the institution’s role as the network’s lead partner: “We have proven that the AFAM system possesses an operational soul, capable of transforming the technological innovation of MUSIC4D into an act of care for the territory.” In the afternoon, the emotional climax was reached with the immersive concert “From Morricone to Bacalov,” a synesthetic journey through the iconic film scores of Southern Italy that merged classical rigor with cutting-edge digital architecture.

The entire event served as a powerful resonance chamber for the fundraising efforts launched by the Municipality of Niscemi. Mayor Massimiliano Conti thanked the AFAM system and the Ministry, emphasizing how beauty has become a “foundational brick” for the town’s reconstruction. The Palermo event was not a conclusion, but rather the launch of a “workshop of hope” that will continue to support and monitor the Niscemi community through December 2026.
