From Sound to the Digital Stage

Sassari Orchestrates the Future with MUSIC4D

The “Luigi Canepa” Conservatory of Sassari, directed by Maestro Mariano Meloni, is among the most active institutions in promoting contemporary musical culture in Sardinia and plays an integral role in the MUSIC4D project. The institute has embarked on a path of structural and pedagogical renewal, which manifests in its embrace of interdisciplinary languages, the valorization of innovative repertoires, and the creation of networks with other Italian conservatories.

Participation in the digital opera Il Furioso, in collaboration with the conservatories of Palermo, Ribera, and other partners, marked a key milestone: the performance—enriched by elements of robotics, AI, and virtual scenography—highlighted the institute’s ability to engage with hybrid performative languages.

Sassari is no stranger to such experimentation. For years, it has promoted artistic projects that foster the convergence of music, theater, visual arts, and literature, integrating academic training with a hands-on, production-oriented approach. Among the most significant experiences is its participation in the Notturni Contemporanei concert series alongside the Conservatory of Cagliari. This initiative allowed for the exploration of new forms of shared performance, where interaction between acoustic instruments, live electronics, and immersive environments offers a renewed experience of classical music.

Within the framework of the MUSIC4D project, the Conservatory of Sassari has also expanded its educational offerings, launching qualifying pathways for the training of secondary school teachers, with particular focus on innovative teaching methods related to music technology. This approach responds to a specific cultural and territorial need: to train a new generation of musicians, educators, and creatives who can consciously navigate the ongoing transformations in the contemporary sonic landscape.

The Conservatory’s involvement in the MUSIC4D network strengthens its vocation to be a hub of experimentation, production, and internationalization.
