On January 30th, the Auditorium of the “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory in Catania will host an immersive performance blending infrasound, satellite imagery, and live improvisation. It is a bold new production from the MUSIC4D project, exploring the dialogue between art and science.
CATANIA, [January 27, 2026] – The Earth has its own voice, a deep song rising from its core. To listen to it, decipher it, and transform it into an artistic experience: this is the audacity of “VULCANICA”, the multimedia opera set to debut in Catania on Friday, January 30th, at 8:30 PM. The performance, produced within the framework of the MUSIC4D project and staged in the Auditorium of the “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory, is not a tribute to Mount Etna, but a true dialogue with its primal energy.
“VULCANICA” is the terrestrial chapter of a broader artistic journey. The creator, Sicilian artist Isabella Libra, after exploring the vibrations of the cosmos in her previous works “Interstellar” and “Galactica,” now turns her ear to the soul of her homeland. She herself highlights its essence: “This show is born from the conviction that art and science can speak to each other. Together with ARTEO, we use infrasound and similar data as a musical score that nature offers us. Our task is to interpret the volcano’s deep song to narrate the fragile and powerful soul of our Island, bathed by a sea that, like Etna, can be both gentle and terrible. It is a sensory journey that continues our investigation into the harmony between humanity and the universe.”
The opera is a true “sonification” of scientific data. The infrasound recorded in the volcano’s depths—signals that foreshadow eruptions—becomes the raw material for an original score. During the show, music performed live on keyboards and percussion, with ample room for improvisation, will merge with an impressive visual tapestry composed of spectacular satellite images provided by the British organization ARTEO, custom-created videos, and an engaging light design. Completing the multicultural experience will be a reading of a poetic text by Swiss poet Gilberto Isella.
The performance will be preceded by a meeting open to the public to illustrate the creative process behind an opera perfectly in line with the vision of MUSIC4D, which acts as an accelerator for the future of higher music education. Led by the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo and launched in 2024, the project is not an abstract initiative but an operational laboratory that explores the intersections of music, technology, and artificial intelligence, opening new frontiers for academic training and equipping the next generation of artists with the tools needed to compete on a global stage. “VULCANICA” perfectly embodies this philosophy, demonstrating how academic research can translate into avant-garde artistic productions. The volcano’s voice is a universal language, and on February 28th, it will take to a second stage to be heard in all its greatness. After its debut on Etna’s slopes, “VULCANICA” will indeed cross the island’s borders for an international stop in London, in collaboration with ARTEO itself. It marks the consecration of an event that does not merely celebrate nature, but learns to listen to it, transforming its deepest secrets into a moving art form.
