Training: Digitalization and Performance

Online Course on Digital Music, Cybernetics, Generative Artificial Intelligence, and Emotional Interaction

A New Horizon for 21st-Century Music Education

At the heart of the MUSIC4D project lies an innovative and strategic course designed to support Italian conservatories in the digital transition of music education. The intensive course Digital Music, Cybernetics, Generative AI and Emotional Collaboration is a unique training proposal for students, teachers, and technical staff of AFAM institutions, aiming to explore the new frontiers of music creation, artificial intelligence, and interactive performance.

Developed in collaboration between the Conservatories of Sicily and Sardinia and the two partner universities – the University of Palermo (Department of Engineering) and the University of Calabria – the course serves as an integrated model of interdisciplinary teaching, where artistic competencies intersect with computational sciences, immersive technologies, and digital languages.

Educational Objectives and Key Topics

Structured into four thematic units, totaling 120 hours (4 ECTS credits), the course tackles the following topics through a laboratory-based and multidisciplinary approach:

1. Digital and Cybernetic Fundamentals

Starting from the physical foundations of sound (resonance, time/frequency domain) and audio signal digitization (Shannon’s theorem, aliasing, quantization), the module covers advanced spectral analysis techniques (FFT, STFT) and digital filters (FIR/IIR). The goal is to strengthen the technical knowledge essential to all digital musical practices.

2. Generative Artificial Intelligence for Music

The core weeks of the course explore AI models for musical composition, improvisation, and orchestration. Participants learn to use open-source environments (such as Magenta, Colab, and Python Notebooks) for automatic sequence generation, style transfer, and creative editing of AI-generated content (LSTM, Transformer, GPT). Extensive focus is also placed on sound synthesis (additive, FM, granular, physical models) and the MIDI protocol.

3. Human–AI Interaction and Emotion

This module explores creative programming environments (TouchDesigner, Max/MSP, PureData, Processing, p5js) for building interactive audiovisual systems and emotional interfaces. A specific focus is dedicated to the cybernetics of performance, where music interacts with sensors, robotics, real-time feedback, and emotion recognition.

4. Final Integrated Project

The course concludes with the creation of an interdisciplinary final project: a multimedia performance or audiovisual composition developed through the acquired technologies, the use of AI, and a reflection on new expressive paradigms. Students are guided in the design and production of a work that synthesizes artistic vision, digital knowledge, and technical skills.

Method and Tools

The course is delivered entirely online, in both asynchronous and synchronous modes (video lessons, tutorials, remote-assisted labs). The educational design addresses the need for upskilling within AFAM institutions, offering a mutual and modular approach. Professional software (DAWs, plug-ins, synthesizers) is combined with visual programming languages and cloud-based environments for algorithmic composition.

The Value of Partnerships

The course is the result of close cooperation among the MUSIC4D partner conservatories and two universities known for excellence in applied research:

  • University of Palermo, with its Department of Engineering active in interaction technologies, spatial audio, and AI;
  • University of Calabria, known for its expertise in computational models and innovative educational design.

The collaboration among institutions fosters a shared vision of digital training, centered on creativity, research, and the transformation of musical languages..

Enrollment

The course is open to all students, teachers, and technical staff of the conservatories participating in the MUSIC4D project.
