The Song of the Volcano Resonates in London: “VULCANICA” Takes the International Stage

Following its triumphant debut in Catania, the multimedia opera developed within the MUSIC4D project is set to premiere internationally in London on 28 February. An immersive performance that transforms Mount Etna’s breath into a live score, fostering a dialogue between art, science, and technology.

Building on its success in Sicily, the multimedia work VULCANICA, created as part of MUSIC4D, is preparing for its international debut on Saturday, 28 February at 8:00 PM, in the prestigious setting of Upper St. Unity Hall in London.

The event marks a significant milestone for this cutting-edge production, which seamlessly integrates geophysical analysis, sound composition, and audiovisual languages into a single, powerful sensory experience. At the core of the project lies the sonification of data collected from the Etnean territory. Through the use of advanced analytical instrumentation, infrasonic emissions produced by the volcano were captured—frequencies beyond the range of human hearing, typically employed for the systematic monitoring of eruptive activity. In VULCANICA, these signals are transposed into musical parameters, serving as a genuine generative matrix for an original score that renders the Earth’s deep energy perceptible in audible form.

Conceived by artist Isabella Libra, the work unfolds as a live performance in which electronic keyboards and percussion interact with digitally processed sequences elaborated in real time. Improvisation plays a pivotal role, allowing the sonic flow to evolve in symbiosis with the underlying technical material. The visual dimension is delivered through a sophisticated projection system based on high-resolution satellite imagery provided by the British organization ARTEO. This scenographic apparatus transforms the venue into an immersive environment, further enriched by verses from poet Gilberto Isella. The literary contribution enhances the scientific rigor of the research, creating a bridge between objective observation and philosophical reflection.

VULCANICA represents a landmark initiative within MUSIC4D, a high-level partnership funded under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Led by the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo, the project brings together academic institutions and research partners from Southern Italy with the aim of exploring new frontiers in artistic creation. Through the application of artificial intelligence and the digitalization of creative processes, MUSIC4D seeks to redefine the relationship between advanced musical training and technological innovation.

The choice of the British capital for this performance reflects a deliberate internationalization strategy, designed to position Italian excellence within the European circuits of interdisciplinary experimentation. The collaboration with ARTEO extends beyond logistical support, encompassing the integration of complex environmental data into the dramaturgical framework.

More than a performance, VULCANICA stands as a case study in which geological data is transformed into aesthetic language. With this London engagement, MUSIC4D once again asserts its presence within the contemporary cultural landscape, demonstrating how academic research can generate universal forms of expression capable of engaging with the challenges of modernity and the enduring allure of nature.
