On January 30th, the Auditorium of the “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory in Catania will host an immersive performance that transforms the volcano’s infrasound into a live musical score. This bold new production from the MUSIC4D project explores the dialogue between natural heritage and technology.

CATANIA – Translating the primordial voice of Mount Etna into a work of art. This is the mission of “VULCANICA”, the highly anticipated multimedia show set to debut in Catania on Friday, January 30th, at 8:30 PM, in the Auditorium of the “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory.

Conceived by Sicilian artist Isabella Libra, the performance is a true “sonification” of scientific data. The infrasound recorded deep within the volcano—signals that foreshadow eruptions—becomes the raw material for an original score, performed live with keyboards, percussion, and ample room for improvisation. The music will be in dialogue with an impressive visual tapestry, composed of satellite images provided by the British organization ARTEO and enriched with texts by Swiss poet Gilberto Isella.

This original production is one of the most significant achievements of MUSIC4D, the ambitious PNRR project led by the Conservatory of Palermo. The initiative embodies its mission to create works that merge academic research with avant-garde performance styles. The show is part of an artistic journey that has already explored the sounds of the cosmos and now turns its ear to the soul of the earth.

“VULCANICA” is more than just a concert; it is a sensory journey that continues the investigation into the harmony between humanity and the universe. After its premiere on Etna’s slopes, the show will travel to London on February 28th, cementing the international reach of an event that learns to listen to the planet, transforming its deepest secrets into emotion.
