Music4D Celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the Italian Republic at the United Nations in New York
On June 4th, the multimedia event “The Music and Screen of Italian Cinema” brings the iconic soundtracks of Southern Italy to the heart of the UN Headquarters—a bridge between cinematic memory and technological innovation.
NEW YORK – The resonance of great Italian cinema returns to the global stage for a high-profile symbolic occasion. To mark the celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Italian Republic, the United Nations Headquarters in New York will host the multimedia concert “The Music and Screen of Italian Cinema” on June 4, 2026.
Promoted by the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations as part of the European MUSIC4D project, the event represents one of the initiative’s most prestigious milestones. It is an immersive journey that reimagines Italian culture through new orchestrations and original arrangements. The program spotlights the scores that have immortalized the imagery of the South and Sicily, blending live music with synchronized film excerpts specifically edited for the occasion to offer a cutting-edge synesthetic experience.
The MUSIC4D Orchestra, an elite ensemble featuring young talents from the Conservatories of Sicily and Sardinia, will take the stage under the baton of Maestro Michelangelo Galeati, with Fabio Crescente on double bass and serving as the project’s scientific coordinator. The musical program pays homage to absolute masterpieces: from the atmosphere of The Leopard (Nino Rota) to the Oscar-winning melodies of Ennio Morricone for Cinema Paradiso and Malèna, through to the sounds of It Started in Naples (Alessandro Cicognini) and the contemporary success of There’s Still Tomorrow (Lele Marchitelli).
The initiative is at the core of MUSIC4D, an ambitious PNRR-funded project led by the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Music in Palermo in synergy with the Conservatories of Sicily and Sardinia and the academic hubs of the University of Palermo and the University of Calabria. The objective is ambitious: to transform the Higher Education in Art and Music (AFAM) system into a permanent laboratory for the integration of historical heritage and digital technologies.
Following successful performances in Los Angeles, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and the Palais des Nations in Geneva, MUSIC4D now arrives at the UN Headquarters. In this context, music and cinema affirm their status as privileged tools of cultural diplomacy, promoting intercultural dialogue, cooperation, and peace among nations through the universal language of beauty.
