Music4D: The Florio Epic Reborn in Trapani through Opera and Artificial Intelligence
The epic of the Florio family, a symbol of a cosmopolitan and enterprising Sicily, is reborn through the most advanced digital innovation. On Saturday, December 13, the San Domenico Complex in Trapani will host the premiere of “I Florio di Sicilia”, a virtual opera by the Antonio Scontrino Conservatory. This event marks a pivotal milestone for MUSIC4D, a project funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) and led by the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo.
Under the artistic direction of Micaela Carosi and featuring original music by Salvatore Scinaldi, this groundbreaking production from Trapani solidifies a strategic partnership with the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid (ESCM). The narrative retraces the rise of the legendary dynasty, interpreting their pioneering spirit through a scenic language that merges solid operatic tradition with virtual architecture.
The opera fuses human creativity with algorithmic potential: the libretto was written with the aid of Artificial Intelligence, while the immersive scenery integrates responsive lighting and soundscapes sampled from ancient Sicilian tuna fisheries. On stage, the Pepper robot will analyze audience emotions in real-time, interacting with performers who will be synchronized with a choir and trio performing live from the Conservatory’s headquarters. This phygital interconnection is made possible by the high-performance network infrastructure established by MUSIC4D, transforming the performance into a cutting-edge laboratory that dissolves physical boundaries and redefines the very concept of stage presence.
The project stands as an authoritative manifesto for higher education, capable of exporting a new way of conceiving and producing art on a global scale. “We are presenting a project that embodies our vision of a future-facing music education”, stated Prof. Elisa Cordova, Director of the Trapani Conservatory, highlighting the importance of training artists capable of navigating increasingly interconnected landscapes. Following its debut in Trapani, which will also be available via livestream, “I Florio di Sicilia” will cross national borders in February 2026 for a prestigious performance in Madrid; a milestone that once again projects the excellence of the MUSIC4D network into the heart of Europe’s creative scene.
