Giancarlo Fortino

Giancarlo Fortino (IEEE Fellow) is a Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Calabria (Unical), where he coordinates the PhD program in ICT and directs the SPEME and Radiomics labs. He also holds prestigious international appointments as a Distinguished Professor and High-End Expert at several Chinese universities (WUT, HUST) and has served as a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley and the Queensland University of Technology. His research interests focus on the IoT, wearable computing, e-Health, and agent-based systems. Author of over 750 scientific publications, he boasts an h-index of 88 and more than 33,000 citations on Google Scholar. He is the only Italian Computer Science professor to be recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate continuously from 2020 to 2025. Professor Fortino holds senior editorial roles for numerous international journals and book series (IEEE Press, Springer) and is deeply committed to technology transfer as a co-founder and CEO/Vice-CEO of the university spinoffs SenSysCal S.r.l. and Bigtech S.r.l. He currently serves as the Vice President of Cybernetics for the IEEE SMC Society (2026-2027 term). Complementing this extensive technological background is his professional contribution to MUSIC4D, where he leads the development of AI systems, multisensory environments, and multi-robot platforms to support musical creation and performance.
